Toxic Pests Found in Las Vegas and it’s Surrounding Areas
Bark Scorpion: The Bark Scorpion is the most common scorpion in Las Vegas. Bark Scorpions have a tannish-brown exterior color. They also happen to be the most venomous scorpions in North America. If you get stung, their venom can cause an intense burning sensation while the pain can be followed by numbness and tingling. Even though the sting is not fatal for healthy adults, it can affect children differently. Muscle twitching, drooling, and even difficulty breathing can occur. These scorpions are native to:
- Arizona
- Mexico
- Nevada
- Southern Utah
- Southwestern New Mexico
Brown Recluse Spider: Brown Recluse spiders are a little bit bigger than the size of a quarter. They are light to dark brown. Most spiders have 8 eyes but Brown Recluse spiders only have 6, making it a feature to be able to differentiate between spiders. The Brown Recluse bite can be intense. In some situations, the most that the bite can do is cause swelling. In the worst case scenario, the bite can lead to severe pain and itching to a necrotic ulcer in less than 8 hours of being bit. The key to knowing if you need to go to the doctor is if you are developing what’s called a “bullseye” pattern. The bullseye pattern is blistered in the center with a purplish blue outer ring.
Black Widow: Black Widows are a jet black spider with a red hour glass shape on their abdomen. Their bodies are about ½ an inch long but their legs are quite long. Most people think that black widows are vicious but they are not aggressive one bit. If you do get bit, their venom is neurotoxic and their venom takes about half an hour to cause symptoms. Children, the elderly, and people with heart or blood pressure problems are more at risk. Black Widows can usually be found in dark and quiet spots.
Other Common Pests
Scorpions

Desert Hairy Scorpion: The Desert Hairy Scorpion is the largest scorpion in North America! This scorpion can range between 5-7 inches long. This scorpion is a tannish color with a darker back. The Desert Hairy Scorpion has little fine hairs on their body as well. You can find the Desert Hairy Scorpion in the Southwestern U.S. like:
- Arizona
- California
- Mexico
- Nevada
- New Mexico
These scorpions can live over 10 years in the wild. The Desert Hairy Scorpions venom is painful but it is not lethal unless you are allergic.
Striped-Tail Scorpion (Devil Scorpion): The Striped-Tail Scorpion has the nickname “Devil Scorpion” because of the quick and painful sting that they offer. The Striped-Tail Scorpion can be yellowish, light tan, or brown in color and have dark stripes across their back. These scorpions are often skittish but are very defensive. These scorpions can be found in:
- Arizona
- California
- Northern Mexico
- Nevada
- New Mexico
(If you get stung, please seek professional help)
If you are finding scorpions in your Las Vegas home, it could be because they are seeking shelter, food, and water. This means your home could be infested with ants, cockroaches, crickets, and spiders that scorpions prey on. Good thing we offer pest control in Las Vegas to treat the general pests like those, too. *wink*
Ants

In Las Vegas, there are multiple types of ants. The spectrum of being harmless to aggressive varies. Here is the list of the ants that you can find in Las Vegas:
Argentine Ants: Argentine ants are native to South America, but were introduced to the United States in 1890. Argentine ants are considered to be harmless, as they do not bite or sting. Argentine ants are reddish-brown in color. Argentine ants are known for being invasive in homes, as they build huge colonies that are hard to get rid of. Argentine ant colonies feature multiple queens, which is why it is hard to get rid of the source of the problem. They are most attracted to sugary foods and water.
Ghost Ants: Ghost ants are extraordinarily small, being about 1/16 of an inch long. They have a dark head but very pale abdomen and legs. These ants are harmless as well but they know how to make colonies and multiple queens. Ghost ants also love sweet and sugary foods.
Fire Ants: Fire ants are small, being about 1/8 of an inch. Fire ants are a distinct red color. They make a colony that looks like dirt mounds going into the ground. Fire ants can bite but you will only feel the burning sensation when they sting. They will sting when they are provoked, especially if you are destroying their mound. Fire ants are also dangerous to wildlife and pets because if they swarm, they will attack with their painful stings.
Pharoah Ants: Pharoah ants are yellowish to light brown in color. They are mainly found indoors. They like to nest in warm areas of your home, like wall outlets, under the floor, in the wall voids, and behind appliances. If they are in your house, they can spread bacteria throughout because they crawl through a number of things to find food. Pharoah ants also have multiple queens.
Odorous House Ants: Odorous house ants can live inside and outside. They like to find warmth and water in your house. These ants are about 1/8 of an inch and are dark brown to black. The thing about these ants is if you crush them, they will release a smell. The smell is often described as a musty, coconut smell.
Most people think they can get rid of ants simply by spraying them with a DIY product often found at a local store. However, that is not the case. If you spray, they will grow their colonies rapidly. This process is called budding.
Other Bugs You’d Need Pest Control in Las Vegas For
Mormon Crickets: Mormon Crickets in Nevada can come in swarms. Mormon Crickets are technically not crickets, they are a Katydid. They are harmless insects that like to eat vegetation which is why they are considered a nuisance. They are not really common in the Las Vegas area but they can show up occasionally. The intense swarm of millions of Mormon crickets in 2023 to 2024 was especially memorable. These insects don’t fly, they travel on foot. In particular, these Mormon crickets covered the roads, buildings, and sidewalks. The Mormon Crickets created a slippery surface and caused car collisions because people had no other choice but to run them over. I bet they wished they had AIMVO Pest Control in Las Vegas at that time!
Cockroaches: Although cockroaches themselves are harmless, it is what they spread throughout your house that can be toxic. Cockroaches crawl through all sorts of things, including sewage and trash. Because of this, roaches can spread E. Coli, salmonella, listeria, among other things. Roaches can also trigger allergies and asthma attacks. Parasites like pinworms, hook worms, and giardia are often found being carried by cockroaches. If you try and spray for roaches yourself, German roaches tend to reproduce even faster. German roaches are can be pretty common in hotels and restaurants in Las Vegas.
Mice and Rats: Pest control in Las Vegas will always treat mice and rats as they are very invasive. The types of mice and rats that Las Vegas have are:
- House Mice: House mice can invade your home looking for warmth and food especially in the colder months of the year.
- Roof Rats: Roof Rats are amazing climbers. They tend to nest on your roof, in your attic, your roof, and even trees.
- Norway Rats: Norway Rats can reach up to 18 inches including their tail! These huge rodents often nest in basements, sewers, and buildings with easy access.
Grasshoppers: In 2019, millions of grasshoppers invaded the strip. There was an estimated 30 metric tons or 66 thousand pounds of grasshoppers. Intense invasions are usually caused by getting more water than usual in the winter time. Grasshoppers are harmless and they do not carry diseases or harm crops, thankfully.
Termites: These subterranean pests in Las Vegas can be tricky to treat. Subterranean termites leave little dirt or mud tubes showing where they were traveling into your home or building. Subterranean termites are the most common termites. Termites can cause all sorts of problems in homes, and even workplaces or hotels. If you see little mud tubes on the foundation of your home or work place, it is better to get a head start on the termite problem then be too late.
Bedbugs: Bedbugs are the most contagious pests in Las Vegas. That is because The Strip has so many hotels and so many visitors everyday that the bedbugs spread like wildfire. Bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed and they feed on human blood. Bedbugs don’t jump, they hitchhike on clothing, bags, used furniture, etc. Bedbugs can cause little itchy bites but they do not transmit diseases.
Kissing Bugs: Like bedbugs, kissing bugs also feed on human and animal blood. The reason they got their name “Kissing Bug” is because they will bite on your neck or face. These bugs are about 1/2 to 1 inch long and they also have a flat, oval-like body. They have little stripe lines on their back.
Las Vegas can be a hotspot for all sorts of insects. There is so many people coming and going. Especially on The Strip and in the hotels. Las Vegas is the perfect place for the insects with warm weather all year round.
