Here's what you should know about bed bugs
Bed Bugs Feed Off of Human Blood
Humans are the preferred host for feeding, especially at night while they sleep. Because bed bugs prefer the dark, their prime time to eat is between midnight and 5am. One feed can take anywhere between 5-10 minutes. The initial bite is usually painless due to the anesthetic and anticoagulant that gets injected into the host. The bites can be found in zig zag clusters or a line, resulting in red, itchy bumps.
First Signs of Infestation
Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets is a sign of an infestation, as this is caused by the bed bugs getting crushed. Bed bug feces will look like dark spots and may bleed through fabric like a marker would. Bug bug eggs are small and hard to see, but you may notice the pale yellow shells. The easiest sign of an infestation is if there are live bed bugs on your bed sheets, mattress or furniture.
Characteristics
Adult bed bugs have a flat, oval-shaped body and are usually the size of an apple seed. If recently fed, the body will be reddish-brown and have a balloon-like appearance. If they have not been fed recently, they will have a brown, elongated body. Young bed bugs are smaller and can be harder to see, as they are translucent or whitish-yellow.
Bed Bugs Can’t Survive Extreme Temps
Bed bugs require such extensive treatment that turning up the heat in the winter or blasting A/C in the summer won’t phase anything. Adult bed bugs will succumb at 119 degrees Fahrenheit, while the eggs need to be exposed in 125+ degrees Fahrenheit for a few hours. Hot temps aren’t the only way to get rid of these pests. Bed bugs succumb in zero degrees fahrenheit after about four days.
